Uitenhage's  independent informational site shows where sportsmen and women are well catered for.

Uitenhage    Has many fine Sporting locations including an Indoor Sports complex Uitenhage Sports Centre which caters for a full range of indoor sports, and a beautiful outdoor Swimming Pool.  A full size Golf Course and a Practice Driving Range. Tennis, Rugby, Squash, Soccer, Bowls etc. are also catered for as is Indoor Cricket. So as well as being a garden town it is also a sporting town.

Mornantau 'Nantie' Hayward born 6 March 1977.    Christo van Rensburg born 23 October 1962. Garth Wright:- Springbok rugby scrum-half from Muir College in the late 80s and early 90s.  Despatch also had its shareof famous sports persons.

Click for more of Willow Dam Willow Dam is just one of the many open areas where visitors and residents alike can relax.  

Willow Dam hosted "Little Bess" a narrow gauge steam train offering rides for your enjoyment. ‘Little Bess’, originally used in the construction of Lake Mentz. Unfortunately this seems to have fallen into disrepair.

The Uitenhage Street Carnival, is celebrated in late November to raise money for charity, it is well worth a visit. part of Caledon Street is closed for the event, the festive street lights are turned on the friday evening. There's a street parade, live entertainment on the street stage, a street market with over 120 stalls, a play land for children and a Miss Carnival Queen pageant.

Strelitzia Dam On the outskirts of the town will be found the Springs resort, site of artesian springs and a resort with chalets, picnic areas, swimming pool and tennis court.

 

Without leaving the town you can relax at Willow Dam,  Strelitzia Dam or Magennis Park right in the heart of Uitenhage it is one of the oldest municipal parks in the country.
 Or Cannon Hill which offers superb views of the town, a tower commemorates the coronation of King George V while the gates to the park commemorate the coronation of his granddaughter Queen Elizabeth the second.  Strelitzia Dam is haven for wild birds and also contains a trim park.  Not far from the town, 11km, is the Groendal Wilderness Area,

The Springs Resort is situated just out side the town.

It also has Conference centers including "The Caledon" in Caledon Street and VJ's Restaurant, Conference Center & B&B in Graaff Reinet Rd.

 On the way to GroendalOr you can take a short drive, 11 km, to the Groendal Nature Reserve 
Nestled in the foothills of the Groot Winterhoek mountains Groendal Nature Reserve covers an area of
30 000 hectares, it is the third largest conservation area in South Africa and is characterised by rugged terrain where the vegetation is predominantly fynbos with a great diversity of individual species.
Isolated pockets of indigenous forest occur in the ravines, and there are also elements of thorny, semi-succulent Valley Bushveld scrub. streams and vast ravines, the reserve is encompassed by the Groot Winterhoek Mountain range and is a beautiful retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life.
There is not a wide range of mammal species within Groendal, but hikers may see baboon, common duiker, Cape Grysbok, bushbuck and mountain reedbuck. Birdlife within the Groendal Wilderness Area is fairly diverse, with approximately 180 species having been recorded.
